These meatballs are slightly crispy on the outside and juicy on the inside.
Keftedes is a famous Greek appetizer, usually served as part of a meze platter or pikilia, with tzatziki dip, pita bread and lemon.
Keftedes: Fried Greek Meatballs
Total time: 30 mins | Yields 6 to 8 people
INGREDIENTS
- 2 lb. ground beef
- 11⁄2 cups grated onion
- 3⁄4 cup dry breadcrumbs
- 1/3 cup dried oregano
- 1⁄2 tsp. ground cumin
- 2 eggs, lightly beaten
- 11⁄2 tsp. salt
- 1/2 tsp. ground black pepper
- lemon wedges to a serving
- Oil enough for frying
INSTRUCTIONS
Add oil to the deep-fryer or a large saucepan over medium heat.
Mix in ground beef, onion, breadcrumbs, oregano, cumin, eggs, salt, and pepper. Mix well, then roll into 1oz round balls.
Place meatballs in batches in the hot oil; do not overcrowd. Fry for 6 to 7 minutes per batch until golden brown and cooked thoroughly. Serve with lemon wedges on the side.
